Everybody likes the Spaniard. He’s charming, intelligent and a great player. Chelsea fans were devastated to see him leave a year ago.
Despite two years of outstanding performances for the Blues, in their David Moyes-induced desperation Manchester United made a massive £37.1m bid for the playmaker that was too good to turn down.
And so the two-time winner of the player of the year award at the Bridge was sent packing, with everyone at the club – including Jose Mourinho who never really fancied the Spaniard – eulogising about him.

Unfortunately, things have turned out much the same in Manchester. The Red Devils signed a host of attacking players in the summer, and once again Mata finds himself the subject of praise for his personality and character, but unable to break into the team.
Recent reports have linked the former Valencia man with to a move back to La Liga with Sevilla. It seems unlikely that the Andalusian club would be able to afford him, even though United are sure to be willing to take a fairly hefty loss on their investment.
But Valencia now have some money after being taken over by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim. Mata must press for a move back to los Ches, where he could restart his career. He’s only 26, and still has the best years of his career ahead of him.
Anybody who is willing to pay for the Spaniard will discover that he’s more than just a good beard and a nice fellow – the guy can play too, if he’s ever given the chance.
