With the January window fast approaching, CaughtOffside takes a look at some of the Premier League faces who would drastically need a January loan move before their careers take a hit at their current clubs.
Lazar Markovic – Liverpool
There was so much hope and promise for the 20 year old Serb at Anfield mainly due to the £20 million Benfica weened out of Liverpool to sell him – but now Markovic cannot even get into the first team.
Whatever Brendan Rodgers has seen on the training field it’s convinced him Markovic is not good enough for Anfield or not ready – either way the most advisable move for both parties would be a January loan move.
Markovic could play every week and work himself into some kind of form, whilst Rodgers wouldn’t have to face a daily reminder that he’s effectively flushed £20 million down the lavatory.
Arouna Kone – Everton
Signed by Roberto Martinez from his old club Wigan Athletic just after he himself made the move, Kone never got the chance to impress at Everton after damaging his knee ligaments in October 2013. Only now is the Ivorian making his comeback with some impressive performances in the Everton youth matches.
A January move would given Kone the chance to regain some match fitness, get a run in a side and hopefully work up enough form to break into the squad next season. Whilst it would also relieve Roberto Martinez of the burden of trying to save Everton’s season and manage Kone’s return to first team football.
Jack Butland – Stoke City
Butland’s Stoke goalkeeping competition, Thomas Sorensen, recently gave an interview where he suggested the 21 year old would have to temporarily leave the Potters in order to get playing and develop his obvious talent.
Normally when young players leave on loan it’s a sign they’re not wanted or deemed not good enough, but Butland faces some difficult competition at Stoke with the sizeable figures of Sorensen and Asmir Begovic ahead of him in the pecking order.
There should be no fears over Butland’s future however as Sorensen says: “He’s working hard, he’s got the talent, I’m sure he will be one of the top keepers in the Premier League in the future.”
Paulinho – Tottenham Hotspur
Corinthians have signalled their intent to re-sign the beleaguered midfielder and whilst Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino might not see the Brazilian’s White Hart Lane career as being over just yet a loan move would undoubtedly be in Paulinho’s favour after just three starts and one substitue appearance in the league this season.
A hit and miss first season that promised so much in it’s infancy but developed into a nightmare could be rectified by an astute January loan move for Paulinho to get some confidence and playing time under his belt.
Ricardo Vaz Te – West Ham United
Almost the forgotten man at the Boleyn Ground. Vaz Te has only made three starts this season which were all in August and one substitute appearance in November.
Vaz Te was the Hammers standout forward in their Premier League promotion campaign of 2011/2012 and even scored the winner if their Wembley play-off against Blackpool to get them back to the top flight.
A January loan with an eye for a more permanent move in summer would be best for the Portuguese forward.
Christian Atsu – Everton (on-loan from Chelsea)
Chelsea are said to be furious with Atsu’s lack of game time since his summer loan deal with Everton.
Just 70 minutes of action for Atsu has led the Blues to demand a recall with a January move to Sunderland touted where it is believe he will have an easier time establishing himself as a first team player.
Scott Sinclair – Manchester City
Sinclair must be shaking his head at his decision to ditch Swansea City, a club where he was and adored icon and one of the first names on the team sheet, to move to Manchester City where, in the two years and four months since his transfer, he has played just 11 first team games.
A loan move last year to West Brom hardly set the world alight and Sinclair is looking for the quickest exit possible, with a January loan option in mind, to stop his career from falling into a complete nose-dive.
Mohamed Salah – Chelsea
The Chelsea outcast who has made just two appearances from the bench for the Blues this season would benefit greatly from a January loan move, particularly given that Mourinho still believes he has a future in the Premier League.
There has certainly been interested from a number of clubs for the Egyptian international and an astute six months away from Stamford Bridge could work wonders for his fledgling career.
Adel Taarabt – QPR
After QPR boss Harry Redknapp’s three stone overweight jibe it’d be hard to see the Moroccon ever making a comeback at QPR.
Taarabt made a shock loan move to AC Milan last year and a temporary spell away before the summer window opens would surely do wonders for his transfer prospects and rebuke his reputation as disruptive and unfit.
If he could keep his head down and establish himself away from QPR in the next six months, Taarabt may have just saved his professional career.
Joel Campbell – Arsenal
Joel Campbell is well accustomed to the loan system. After joining Arsenal in 2011 he’s been on three loans in as many years.
Following on from his World Cup exploits with Costa Rica, it was thought Arsene Wenger might give him a chance in the Arsenal squad. However, chances have been shortcoming and Campbell has hardly impressed when starting in the League Cup for the Gunners or coming on from the bench.
There are whispers of unhappiness being published on an almost daily basis but, if the transfer rumours are true, hardly a lack of suitors. A six month loan in England could give the Costa Rican the proof he needs to show the Arsenal boss he can cut it in the Premier League.
