The Red Devils have not won the competition since 2004 and with no Champions League football at Old Trafford this term, van Gaal views 2014/15 as the perfect opportunity to win it again.
“I know what the FA Cup means to this club, our players and our fans. Its place in the history of Manchester United is well known,” the Dutchman was quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“So it is hard to believe that long-serving players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Jonny Evans have never won this cup. It is a medal I know they are desperate to get their hands on.
“This is a very important competition and probably the most famous domestic cup in the world.”
United will get their first chance in the competition during the Third Round on January 3, with the draw for that taking place on Monday after the weekend’s fixtures in the Second Round.
The club have won the FA Cup a joint record 11 times in their history along with Arsenal and van Gaal clearly wants to make his mark on English football immediately by making it 12 this campaign.
