However, he’s far from the only world football superstar out of contract in 2015. CaughtOffside counts down an all-star line-up of out of contract players, available for free next summer, and on pre-contract in just four weeks time:
GK) Neto (Fiorentina)
Brazilian goalkeeper who was rumoured to be interesting Liverpool this summer, was part of his country’s Olympic team in 2012.
CB) John Terry (Chelsea)
Iconic Chelsea captain who has been in top form during the Blues unbeaten start to the season. Will surely be handed a new deal.
CB) Christopher Samba (Dinamo Moscow)
Former Blackburn Rovers stalwart and Queens Park Rangers flop, Samba could be tempted into showing that he does still possess Premier League quality.
CB) Fabian Schar (Basel)
Highly rated Switzerland international who has impressed again in this year’s Champions League with Basel. Has scored four times in his first nine games for his country.
DM) Nigel de Jong (AC Milan)
Former Manchester City midfielder and World Cup finalist with the Netherlands, he could still bring some much needed grit and determination to a Premier League midfield.
CM) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)
World Cup winning German star who looks certain to leave Real Madrid, despite failing to do so over the course of a summer of heavy transfer speculation.
CM) Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Iconic Liverpool captain who is no longer guaranteed an automatic starting spot at Anfield, and is still hungry to be playing first-team football.
RM) James Milner (Manchester City)
Versatile England international who deserves better to be sitting on the Manchester City bench, and will want first-team football to protect his international spot.
LM) Yevhen Konoplyanka (Dnipro)
Ukrainian winger who has previously interested both Liverpool and Tottenham. Has impressed at international level, and will be desperate to prove his doubters wrong by playing well in England.
ST) Andre-Pierre Gignac (Marseille)
Experienced French striker who has found the best form of his career so far this season, scoring 11 goals and inspiring his team to the top of the league.
ST) Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Schalke)
Another experience forward, the Dutchman has proved his worth in Spain, Italy and Germany, and would surely love to complete his legacy with a spell in the Premier League.
