Ranking The Six Main Contenders To Win The Champions League
Arsenal got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to struggling West Bromwich Albion, and here’s how Arsene Wenger’s side rated at the Hawthorns…
GK: Damian Martinez
The young Argentine didn’t have a great deal to do this afternoon, but deserves some credit as Arsenal’s defence looked somewhat more organised and solid than usual. 6/10.
DR: Calum Chambers
Another good game in all departments from exciting youngster Calum Chambers, who kept West Brom quiet and looked threatening going forward. 7/10.
DL: Kieran Gibbs
An early substitute for the injured Nacho Monreal, Kieran Gibbs had a fine game as well for Arsenal as they held on for a win at the Hawthorns. 7/10.
DC: Laurent Koscielny
A solid performance considering it was his first game back from injury, Laurent Koscielny did well at the back for Arsenal as they kept a clean sheet. 7/10.
DC: Per Mertesacker
Better with Koscielny alongside him, Per Mertesacker did well to weather a late West Brom storm as Arsenal ground out a hard-fought victory. 7/10.
MC: Mathieu Flamini
Solid and unspectacular as usual, Mathieu Flamini did well in front of the defence for Arsenal, allowing the team’s attacking players the platform to shine. 6.5/10.
MC: Aaron Ramsey
Another quiet game from Aaron Ramsey, who looks some way off the top form he showed for the Gunners last season. Never really looked a goal threat, though he kept the game ticking along in the middle of the park. 6.5/10.
AMR: Alexis Sanchez
A quiet game by his standards, but Alexis Sanchez showed some moments of quality for Arsenal upfront, perhaps not playing in his best position on the right-hand side of the attack. 6.5/10.
AML: Danny Welbeck
Controversially moved into the role he has been open about not enjoying playing during his Manchester United days, Danny Welbeck still looked impressive for Arsenal on the left-hand side, getting into the box to powerfully head home the winning goal against the Baggies. 8/10.
AMC: Santi Cazorla
Perhaps the best player on the pitch, Santi Cazorla showed great work rate today and was at the heart of every good attacking play by the Gunners, going on a great run to set up Welbeck for the winner. 8.5/10.
FC: Olivier Giroud
Not at his best as he returns from a long injury layoff, but Olivier Giroud’s presence upfront helped Arsenal look like a more impressive attacking unit, and the goals should come for the Frenchman with an extended run in the side. 6.5/10.
