Brendan Rodgers spent heavily on new signings this summer to make up for the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, which also handed the Reds boss plenty of cash to spend in the transfer market.
In an attempt to almost rebuild his entire squad, Rodgers signed several expensive flops that now look to be big mistakes after the club endures a nightmare start to the season.
Liverpool were disappointing again as they could only manage a point against the Bulgarian minnows, being pegged back late on despite taking a 2-1 lead.
All the while, the players dropped to the bench cost a whopping £88m combined, with these seven players failing to start the game this midweek:
1) Dejan Lovren (£20m)
Impressive for Southampton last season, Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren has been a massive disappointment since his £20m move to Anfield, looking unconfident and suspect at the back as the Reds have leaked goals all season long, and he was dropped to the bench for this big game.
2) Alberto Moreno (£12m)
An exciting young left-back, another Liverpool summer signing Alberto Moreno was also only among the substitutes in the Champions League this week, though he cost the club as much as £12m to bring to the club from Sevilla.
3) Adam Lallana (£25m)
The most expensive of the lot, another failed summer signing from Southampton, Adam Lallana, made up a whopping £25m’s worth of talent sitting and watching the game from the bench.
4) Emre Can (£9.75m)
A decent young player, but still one failing to make much of an impression since his £9.75m move from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
5) Fabio Borini (£10.5m)
One of Rodgers’ early signings when he moved to Liverpool, it is no surprise to see £10.5m man Fabio Borini still out of the side after failing to earn a permanent move away from the club after spending last season on loan at Sunderland.
6) Philippe Coutinho (£8.5m)
A fine player struggling to hit his very best form at the moment, £8.5m Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho was also a somewhat surprise inclusion on the bench for this match.
7) Brad Jones (£2.3m)
Finally, this expensive bench also included backup goalkeeper Brad Jones, who was by far the cheapest of the lot.
