The Gunners have had their eye on the Republic of Ireland international for some time with his reputation continuing to rise after impressive form with Wigan Athletic and now the Toffees.
However, McCarthy is a key part of Roberto Martinez’s side currently and the Spaniard would be unwilling to part with one of his most prized assets.

The North London outfit are on the search for a holding player with concerns growing over the capabilities of captain Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini in the role.
Wenger had hoped that either Abou Diaby or Jack Wilshere could have taken up the mantle, but injuries are making that wish nigh on impossible to realise.
This has drawn the Frenchman to many different options in recent times, with Real Madrid star Sami Khedira and Grzegorz Krychowiak of Sevilla also being monitored.
