5) Monaco v Real Madrid, 2003/04 quarter finals
This is a game that has been remembered for Fernando Morientes’ impact. After losing the first leg 4-2, Monaco then proceeded to concede another at the start of the second. This left them 5-2 down. Ludovic Giuly may have scored twice, but it was the Spaniard’s goal to take them through on away goals led to headlines. The forward had been farmed out on loan from Los Blancos and got his revenge by knocking out his parent club out of the competition.
4) Chelsea v Napoli, 2011/12 round of 16
The Blues had lost the first leg 3-1, and Andre Villas-Boas had been sacked in between the two matches. Roberto Di Matteo then came in and turned things around. The Stamford Bridge outfit won 3-1 in normal time and then Branislav Ivanovic completed the comeback in extra time. They went on to win the Champions League against all the odds.
3) Deportivo La Coruna v AC Milan, 2003/04 quarter finals
AC Milan were possibly the best team in the world at the time, and had won the first leg 4-1. It must have been a sure thing? Apparently not, as Deportivo won 4-0 in their back yard and sent a team that included Andrea Pirlo, Alessandro Nesta, and Paolo Maldini among others out of the cup.
2) Manchester United v Bayern Munich, final 1999
One of the most famous comebacks ever, United were 1-0 down going in to injury time. Everyone knows what happened next, as two goals in three minutes left the Germans stunned. Sir Alex Ferguson lifted his first Champions League, and the Red Devils’ era of dominance continued.
1) Liverpool v AC Milan, final 2005
Perhaps the most well known comeback in all of football let alone the Champions League, its hard to talk to a Liverpool fan without Istanbul coming up. 3-0 down at half time, the Reds brought it back to 3-3 before eventually winning on penalties.
