Here are the most expensive fixtures for each of Europe’s top five leagues this season, according to Football Observatory:

Serie A) Inter Milan v Napoli – €263m

Although not always the case, it is common for the teams who have spent the most to be in and around the top of their respective leagues. It is unusual therefore, that the most expensive match this season in the Italian league is between ninth placed Inter Milan and third placed Napoli.

Bundesliga) Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund – €272m

The Bundesliga is known for bringing talent through their youth system, but to remain competitive in Europe Dortmund and Bayern have still had to splash the cash occasionally on a number of world class players.

Ligue 1) Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique de Marseille – €503

The fact that PSG have spent more than four times as much as Marseille makes it that much more impressive that the latter are currently sat top of Ligue 1. With the Parisians spending astronomical amounts on the likes of David Luiz, it’s not wonder they have such a hugely expensive squad.

Premier League) Manchester City v Chelsea – €578m

Both City and Chelsea have received massive cash injections over the last decade or so, and although they haven’t always spent wisely, both sides have built up truly world class teams.

La Liga) Real Madrid v Barcelona – €690m

With players like Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s no surprise that El Clasico is the most expensive fixture in the world. And imagine if players like Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta who have spent their entire careers at the club, were to be considered based on their current value.
