Liverpool eyeing up Jurgen Klopp
The international break is, happily, over and Premier League action returned to our screens with a bang this weekend as Arsenal and Liverpool both endured miserable weekends with surprise defeats.
At the other end of the spectrum, however, there was plenty of impressive displays, but who made it into our Premier League team of the week?
GK) David de Gea (Manchester United)
The Man United stopper was in imperious form and seemed like a magnet as every Arsenal cross and shot seemingly stuck to him.
RB) Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea)
Chelsea’s Serbian full back is having possibly the season of his career, contributing in defence and attack as he did once again against West Brom.
CB) Scott Dann (Crystal Palace)
Has fallen off the radar somewhat in recent seasons, but showed his Birmingham City form with a commanding display against Liverpool at Selhurst Park.
CB) Chris Smalling (Manchester United)
Smalling was excellent as Arsenal saw things through to win at the Emirates Stadium, putting his dismal performance in the Manchester derby to the back of his mind.
LB) Massadio Haidara (Newcastle United)
Certainly hasn’t been a regular for Newcastle since moving to the club from Ligue 1, but was excellent as the Magpies saw off QPR at St. James’ Park.
RM) Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur)
Eriksen was the difference as Spurs came from behind to beat ten man Hull, drifting into the space and causing all sorts of problems before hitting a fine winner.
CM) Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)
Fabregas was back on form after a couple of quiet weeks before the international break, dictating the game as Chelsea put in a virtuoso display against West Brom.
CM) David Jones (Burnley)
Jones is having his third crack at the Premier League after spells with Wolves and Wigan Athletic – displays like this suggest that he could have staying power this time.
LM) Yannick Bolasie (Crystal Palace)
Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock said after the game that Yannick Bolasie doesn’t even know what he’s doing, let alone the full back – but it all went right for the inconsistent winger against Liverpool.
SC) Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
A captain’s performance from Wayne Rooney at the Emirates Stadium, he was good on the ball, worked incredibly hard and scored a fine goal to settle matters.
SC) Danny Ings (Burnley)
Burnley’s lack of goals earlier in the season was put down to the loss of Ings and striker partner Sam Vokes to injury, but the England Under 21 international is back and scored twice in victory at Stoke.
