5) He moved 3,000km from his family to play football
What convinced Hoffenheim to take a risk on Firmino was his amazing attitude. At the age of 14 he had moved to Florianopolis, 3,000km from his family, to try and make it as a pro. He didn’t see his mother for over a year, but he took it all in his stride.
4) He’s a true number 10
Firmino assists and scores in equal measure. He scored 16 in 33 games last season, which is more than Neymar got in the league for Barcelona. Firmino also assisted 12 goals: only Marco Reus assisted more in the Bundesliga. He doesn’t shirk his defensive duties either: his 2.5 tackles per game last year was more than Chelsea’s Oscar.
3) He’s being chased by the world’s biggest clubs
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were apparently keen on the star over the summer, but the giants have competition now, as English clubs have woken up to his talent. Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea have all been linked with a January move for the 23-year-old.
2) He’s a key part of Dunga’s Brazil plans
Firmino got his first Brazil caps in midweek and didn’t disappoint, scoring a stunning long range winner against Austria. Given the dearth of number 10s in Brazil, Firmino has been installed at the front of the queue for a key role in Dunga’s new-look side.
