Recent results against Anderlecht in the Champions League and Swansea City in the Premier League – which saw the Gunners throw away leads to draw and lose respectively – has gotten people suggesting the Frenchman is past it once more.

It is only a matter of time before Wenger leaves the Emirates Stadium, with his current contract expiring in 2017, but if the 65-year-old were to depart before then here are five potential replacements.

Steve Bould

The current assistant for the North Londoners has been tipped to take over when his boss leaves having been nurtured to take the club forward in the same direction.

Bould has been a coach at the club since 2001 and Wenger’s No.2 following Pat Rice’s retirement in 2012, but this would be his first proper managerial role.

Paul Clement

For those of you still unaware of Clement he is and English coach who is currently understudy to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and has previously worked at Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

Apparently Wenger is a big fan of the 42-year-old and would welcome him as his replacement, but like Bould it would be a first time manager’s position for the Madrid man.

Pep Guardiola

A big step up now in terms of reputation with Guardiola widely considered to be the best manager in world football currently and admitted before taking over at Bayern Munich that he would like to manager in England one day.

“I hope in the future I have a challenge to be a coach or a manager there and feel the experience of all the coaches and players that have been there,” the Spaniard was quoted by the Daily Star.

Jurgen Klopp

Another Bundesliga ace now and a coach who has built a great reputation for himself at Borussia Dortmund since taking charge in 2008 and like Guardiola has admitted the English top tier is a favoured destination for him.

“I think it’s the only country I think where I should work, next to Germany,” Klopp was quoted by the Daily Star.

Roberto Martinez

Finally it’s a Spanish boss who has achieved great things in English football already, having won the FA Cup against the odds with Wigan Athletic and guiding Everton to their highest ever points total in 2013/14.

Martinez would fit the North London side’s style of slick passing football well and could potentially be a big hit at the Emirates.
