The 29-year-old will continue to chase Sir Bobby Charlton’s of 49 when his country take on Slovenia on Saturday. With still several good years left in him, check out the list of players Rooney still needs to pass to become England’s all-time top scorer.

10) Frank Lampard (29)

Scored 29 goals in 106 games, but never found the net in a World Cup, not including his controversially ruled out strike against Germany in 2010.

9) Vivian Woodward (29)

Scored an incredible 29 goals in 23 games before his England career was cut short by the start of the First World War. Injuries sustained in the war eventually forced him to retire.

8) Tom Finney (30)

The legendary Preston North End winger, who died earlier this year at the age of 91, made 76 appearances for his country following directly on from the Second World War.

7) Alan Shearer (30)

The Premier League’s all time leading goalscorer scored his goals in just 63 games before hanging up his international boots in 2000. He would continue his club career until 2006.

6) Nat Lofthouse (30)

The iconic Bolton forward played just 33 times for England between 1950 and 1958, but still had time to make a lasting mark on Three Lions history.

5) Michael Owen (40)

It all started with that famous goal against Argentina in 1998. Owen would go on to play for England for another decade, before finishing with 89 caps and 40 goals.

4) Wayne Rooney (43)

Burst onto the scene in 2003 before playing a starring role in England’s Euro 2004 campaign, scoring four times in the group stage after netting twice in the latter stages of qualifying. Has to wait until 2012 for his next tournament goal.

3) Jimmy Greaves (44)

The next man on Rooney’s hit-list, Greaves scored 44 times in just 57 games, but cruelly missed out on the 1966 World Cup final, where he was of course replaced by Geoff Hurst.

2) Gary Lineker (48)

His goals came in 80 games as he led arguably the second best England team of all time between 1984 and 1992. He scored four times in a match on two occasions.

1) Bobby Charlton (49)

The 1966 World Cup winners goals came in 106 games. The Manchester United legend also netted 199 times in 606 league games for his club between 1956 and 1973.
