The incident involving the former Manchester United midfielder allegedly took place just 48 hours before Ireland’s crucial Euro 2016 qualification clash with Scotland.
Reports in the Daily Mail explain that Keane was supposedly caught up in an incident which saw an individual attacked outside the luxury Links Hotel in Portmarnock after team training.
The FAI released a statement, saying: “Following inaccurate media reports which refer to an incident involving a member of the public this evening at the Republic of Ireland team hotel, we wish to clarify that Roy Keane called the Gardai following the incident.
“The manager, Martin O’Neill and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the Assistant Manager has their full support.”
According to a well-placed source there was a brief exchange of words between Roy and the individual in the early evening. Things quickly heated up and the row ended with the victim on the ground. A Garda spokesman confirmed that an investigation into the alleged assault was ongoing.
“It appeared fairly innocuous”, said a source. “A man approached Roy outside the hotel, there appeared to be a few heated words and then the man was on the ground. It happened very quickly. Gardai were called along with the ambulance services and the man was taken away to receive medical attention.”
