1) Defence a shambles

Like for many years under Wenger, Arsenal’s defence is a total shambles. The Gunners have leaked goals this season, partly down to a lack of personnel and partly down to what looks like a clear lack of tactical drilling on the training pitch, both of which are Wenger’s responsibility. Nacho Monreal is not a centre-back and he shouldn’t have to be playing there, but is forced to do so due to Wenger’s inability to find a player in that position in an entire summer.

2) No spirit in the team

This Arsenal team has no spirit. In midweek they somehow let a comfortable 3-0 lead slip as they drew 3-3 at home to an average Anderlecht side, and this weekend they again lost the lead as they went from 1-0 up to 2-1 down away to Swansea City in what should have been another fairly straightforward three points. For many years they have lacked leaders and fighters, and that hasn’t changed.

3) Season over already

This season is already over – Arsenal aren’t going to win the league or the Champions League, they’re out of the League Cup and all there is to look forward to is the FA Cup and the fight for fourth. Now is as good a time as ever to bring in a new manager and start afresh, with the rest of the season essentially a long pre-season for the next coach to prepare for the future. While it is inexcusable for a club of Arsenal’s size to be making this admission already, they might as well take a gamble and make the most of it.

4) Great players like Sanchez won’t stay

Alexis Sanchez scored again against Swansea and has been an absolutely terrific signing for Arsenal. Still, if the club continue to put in pathetic performances like this, then he surely won’t stay for very long, and it’s vital that they keep him. The Chilean could potentially be one of their best players for a long time, and they need to bring in more signings to match his quality and ensure his displays are rewarded with trophies.

5) Refusal to acknowledge any problems

Worst of all, Arsene Wenger simply refuses to acknowledge that there is anything wrong with his team. The Frenchman was furious as he hit out at Paul Merson for his criticism of his side’s defending, citing that he hasn’t managed at the top level and therefore can’t comment. Still, it doesn’t take a genius to see there is something badly wrong at the Emirates Stadium, and many former players have revealed that Wenger does not focus on opposition tactics, sticking rigidly to his own game plan whatever the result.
