According to various recent reports, the Red Devils are currently after four players with World Cup winners’ medals, with van Gaal keen to bring in three members of Germany’s victorious squad from this summer’s tournament, as well as a Spanish international that tasted glory in the competition back in 2010.

With United desperate to get back to the top of English football after a disastrous season under David Moyes last year, van Gaal has already spent heavily on a host of new big-name signings in the summer, and these four also fit the credentials he seems to be looking for as he looks to build a team of winners at Old Trafford.

4) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A world class central defender, Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels is one of United’s top targets to come in and help them strengthen at the back, which has been a problem position for the Red Devils based on performances so far this season. However, Arsenal could also provide competition for his signature.

3) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)

Manchester United are also ready to join the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the pursuit of want-away Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, who picked up the World Cup after also tasting Champions League glory with his club last season.

2) Julian Draxler (Schalke)

One of the most promising youngsters in the world, Schalke attacking midfielder and long-time Arsenal target Julian Draxler is also on United’a agenda this January. A star of the future, the 21-year-old has already lifted the ultimate prize after his involvement for Germany in Brazil this summer.

1) Gerard Pique (Barcelona)

Finally, United want to bring back one of their former players as they line up a move for Barcelona defender Gerard Pique. Despite being a key figure in the club’s recent success, as well as winning the World Cup for Spain at their peak, he now looks out of favour at the Nou Camp and may be allowed a move this January.
