As TalkSport explains, the issue of player wages is frequently used as stick to beat under-performing stars and preening prima donnas, but is hardly mentioned when in relation to a manager’s performance in the hot seat.
5) Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool) – £3.25m-a-year
We kick off with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers who earns just above the average for a top flight manager. During the Northern Irishman ‘s two years and four month reign at the club he has transformed the Redmen from eighth place to title contenders.
4) Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City) – £3.47m-a-year
When he arrived in Manchester last summer, Manuel Pellegrini did so with great pressure on his shoulders. That didn’t seem to worry the Chilean though, as he delivered City their second league title in three seasons and took them to their most advanced stage in the Champions League. His salary is modest in comparison to the remaining managers on this list, and seems well worth the outlay.
3) Arsene Wenger (Arsenal) – £6.89m-a-year
The Premier League’s most experienced boss, Arsene Wenger changed the culture of football in England when he arrived at Arsenal in 1996 and has since become woven into the fabric of the club. That longevity has also resulted in bumper salary, although given his delivery of just one trophy over the past eight seasons asks questions of his high earnings.
2) Louis van Gaal (Manchester United) – £7m-a-year
Man United appear to have learned from the mistake in appointing David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor by opting for high-level experience in their latest appointment Louis van Gaal. However, such a managerial signing comes at a price, with the Red Devils lavishing a reported £7m-a-year for the Dutchman’s services. Only time will tell if it is money well spent.
1) Jose Mourinho (Chelsea) – £8.37m-a-year
Jose Mourinho’s track record for success makes him one of the world’s best managers and as one of the world’s best he is able to command astronomical money. Mourinho returned to Chelsea last summer following a five-year spell away from Stamford Bridge and while he did to mark his homecoming with silverware, the Blues look in good shape to do so this season.
