Meyiwa, who had six caps for his country and had played more than 70 times for Orlando Pirates, one of South Africa’s most popular clubs, played on Saturday night for his side as they defeated Ajax Cape Town 4-1 in a cup competition.
The 27 year-old had been a star of the South African national team in recent months, captaining them in their four African Cup of Nations qualifying ties to date and not conceding a goal in that time.
Whilst details appear to be sketchy at this stage, Sport24 quote the South African Police Services in saying that Meyiwa was shot after an altercation when seven men entered his house, with a reward being offered for any information about the incident.
Tributes have been pouring in from teammates of Meyiwa on Twitter, with Bafana midfielder Dean Furman, who currently plays for League One club Doncaster Rovers, being one of a number of current players to react to the tragic news.
Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa. thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time.
