Which other nine thrashings join Southampton’s weekend goalfest in this top ten?
There’s no doubting what the big story of Saturday’s Premier League action was – Southampton’s incredible 8-0 victory over Sunderland at St. Mary’s, a result that goes straight into the list of the Premier League’s heaviest victories.

What are the other hammerings on this list, however? We take a look:
10) Chelsea 7-0 Stoke City (2010)
Chelsea made hammerings something of a regular occurrence at the end of the 2009/10 season, with this beating of Stoke City coming just before another game on this list. Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou were amongst the scores here.
9) Arsenal 7-0 Middlesbrough (2006)
Thierry Henry was playing the finest football of his career in 2005/06 – and Middlesbrough took the brunt of the Frenchman’s genius here, with Henry scoring a hat-trick in a smashing 7-0 victory.
8) Middlesbrough 8-1 Manchester City (2008)
Fun and games at the end of the 2007/08 season this one, where Sven Goran Eriksson and Manchester City turned up at the Riverside Stadium not really up for it – and got an 8-1 hammering from a Steve McClaren side who really fancied the occasion.
7) Nottingham Forest 1-8 Manchester United (1999)
Manchester United were well on the way to winning the treble when they traveled to the City Ground in earlier 1999 to play a poor Nottingham Forest team – unsurprisingly Sir Alex Ferguson’s troops sliced through a Forest side who suffered the ignominy of being thrashed on home soil.
6) Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa (2012)
Chelsea are the only team to appear in this list three times – and it is another modern day hammering at Stamford Bridge, with Aston Villa being the victims of a rampant Blues side in 2012 that saw Fernando Torres actually performing.
5) Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic (2010)
One of two results from Chelsea’s run in to the 2010 Premier League title make this list – but this destruction of Roberto Martinez’s Wigan was the slightly more emphatic from Carlo Ancelotti’s brilliantly entertaining side.
4) Newcastle United 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday (1999)
Danny Wilson’s Sheffield Wednesday side definitely weren’t known for their ability to defend – but this thrashing at the hands of a rampant Alan Shearer and Newcastle was as bad as it got for the Owls in 1999/2000.
3) Southampton 8-0 Sunderland (2014)
The only entrant from the last two years in this list was yesterday’s annihilation of Sunderland by Southampton, which included this own goal from Santiago Vergini, which must be up there with the finest of the Premier League era on its own.
2) Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic (2009)
The second defeat by Roberto Martinez and his Wigan Athletic side to appear in this list, their trip to White Hart Lane in November 2009 was not a fruitful one – Jermain Defoe scored twice as the home side ran riot.
1) Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (1995)
Still the only Premier League game to have finished with a nine goal winning margin, Manchester United’s 1995 evisceration of Ipswich Town is still the biggest Premier League win ever. When will it be beaten?
