When the former Man United star missed a penalty against Andorra, one of the opposition defenders to run up to him and laugh in his face. Therefore, when Van Nistelrooy scored later in the game, he went directly to his opponent to celebrate.

7) Craig Bellamy (Liverpool)

A night out in Barcelona ahead of a Champions League game culminated with Bellamy using a golf club to attack his team-mate John Arne Riise. So when the Welshman found the next against the Catalans, he celebrated in the same fashion.

6) Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City)

While playing for City against his former club Arsenal, Adebayor sprinted the full length of the pitch to vigorously celebrate in front of the opposing team’s fans.

While many remember the infamous ‘dentist chair’ celebration, Gascoigne’s most controversial moment on the field came when he pretended to play the flute, a Loyalist symbol, right in front of Celtic fans in a Glasgow derby.

4) Robbie Fowler (Liverpool)

Fowler responded to accusations from Everton fans that he used drugs by pretending to snort the whitened line of the pitch. Manager Gerard Houllier claimed Fowler was eating the grass, a celebration from team-mate Rigobert Song’s old club, Metz.

3) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint Germain)

Cavani appeared to receive his first yellow card for a gun-like celebration at Stade Felix-Bollaert. He got his second yellow for putting his hand on referee Nicolas Rainville.

2) Nicolas Anelka (West Bromwich Albion)

Anelka’s “quenelle” gesture was interpreted as anti-Semitic last season, and led to the termination of his contract. Anelka’s use of it has caused outrage with many groups, including Kick It Out and the West Brom Official Supporters’ Club.

1) Giorgos Katidis (AEK Athens)

The 20-year-old Greek midfielder scored in a game near the end of last season for AEK and performed the Nazi salute as a celebration. Despite insisting he didn’t know what the gesture meant, he was released from his AEK contract in the summer.
