Sunderland Boss Gus Poyet Speaks After “Embarrassing” 8-0 Defeat To Southampton

Poyet bemoans the worst day of his managerial career.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has described his side’s 8-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton today as “embarrassing”, report the Daily Star, with the Uruguayan also indicating that he doesn’t know how to explain his side’s inexplicable capitulation on the South Coast.

Poyet was at a loss for words following his side’s second half capitulation at St. Mary’s, which had come following two freaks goals giving Southampton the lead, including an incredible own goal by Santiago Vergini:

“Where do I start? First, it was the most embarrassing I’ve had on a football pitch without any doubt.”

“I feel sorry for the supporters. I thought we were creating something between the team and the supporters – they made a long trip and they deserved better. What I say in the dressing room stays in there.”

The result comes as such a shock because Sunderland have, in the main, been solid rather than spectacular this season, defending reasonably well until they came up against a Southampton team who are rampant under Ronald Koeman.
