Five things we learnt from Sergio Aguero’s masterclass against Spurs.
Manchester City made light work of Tottenham during Saturday’s early kick off in the Premier League, though there were two men that stole the show on the day – Sergio Aguero and referee John Moss. With that in mind here are five points we picked up from the game.

5. City can operate fine without Toure
Many thought the Ivorian would be a big miss for the Champions on Saturday, but Manuel Pellegrini showed fans and critics alike that the side are able to cope without him by resting him until the final 15 minutes. Spurs had a good share of the possession in the middle, but were still unable to do anything with it and City always made sure they found where the holes in the back line was to exploit.
4. Ryan Mason: secret weapon
The ‘young’ midfielder has only just made his breakthrough at White Heart Lane despite being on the books there for a number of years, but his bright start could be just a glimpse of what he is capable of. He has been displaying the signs of a classic all action midfielder, showing an eye for goal as well as an ability and willingness to close down and win the ball back. Could be vital as the season progresses.
3. John Moss loves a penalty
Referees aren’t supposed to be major players in a game, ideally they’ll remain in the supporting cast. However, John Moss placed himself right next to Sergio Aguero at centre stage on Saturday afternoon by awarding four penalties. Moss has generally been one of the top flight’s steadier referees since his debut in 2011, but two of those spot kicks were very soft, and Federico Fazio is justified in feeling slightly put out by his harsh red card.
2. Unreliable Lampard
Having been taken off just 20 minutes in, City fans finally got to see the mortal side of the ex-Chelsea star who had them believing he was from another world with his performances recently. He is still an effective performer at Premier League level, but at his age he just won’t be able to do it on a regular basis. Perhaps extending that loan won’t be such a big deal after all.
1. Sergio Aguero – best in the league
Never mind Diego Costa, Aguero bagged four goals against Spurs to remind everyone that he is still the best established striker in the Premier League. From the penalty spot, he became City’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, finally surpassing Carlos Tevez’s 58 goals – and there is no sign of Aguero stopping adding to it now.
