Arsene Wenger admitted that the Gunners were chasing one more player during the summer, something the Frenchman will surely revisit in the Winter transfer window.
Here are six targets Arsenal should be targeting in January to strengthen their defence, according to the Daily Mail.
6) Matija Nastasic – Manchester City
Having brought in Eliaquim Mangala in the summer, Nastasic has fallen even further down the pecking order with the Premier League champions this season.
At just 21-years-old and with a possible transfer fee of less than £12m, he could prove a bargain if Arsene Wenger can pick him up cheaply.
5) Stephane Sparagna – Marseille
As a relative unknown, a fellow Frenchman, and at just 19-years-old, Sparagna is a typical Arsene Wenger signing.
The Marseille defender’s youth contract expires in December, so Arsenal could get him for essentially nothing.
4) Ron Vlaar – Aston Villa
Due to his age the Dutchman is probably less likely to want to join Arsenal if it means just sitting on the bench.
With Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny surely ahead of him he would not slot straight into the first team, and there is competition from a number of other Premier League clubs who might be able to offer him the guarantee of first team football.
3) Winston Reid – West Ham
West Ham have been attempting to tie Reid down to a new contract recently, but so far the talks have stalled.
With his deal expiring very soon, he could be available for next to nothing if Arsenal decide to go in for him.
2) Liam Moore – Leicester City
21-year-old Moore is a player Arsenal have apparently been keeping an eye on for years. The Leicester City man may not be at the required level to make the jump to Arsenal just yet however, and would not really be much of an improvement on the back ups already at Wenger’s disposal.
1) Sokratis Papastathopoulos – Borussia Dortmund
The Greek international was allegedly very close to joining Arsenal this summer, but an injury to star man Mats Hummels left Borussia Dortmund short in defence and put paid to the deal.
The Bundesliga side may not be looking to sell in January, so if Wenger wants to get a decent price on the £17m rated defender then he might have to wait until the summer.
