The Argentine international is known to be a long term target of the Merseyside club and despite the acquisitions of Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli it appears Rodgers is still keen to strengthen his Liverpool attack.

Higuain has been a consistent attacking weapon since moving from Real Madrid to Naples but his side’s inability to safely negotiate passage through the Champions League qualifiers to the group stages leaves the Serie A side having to consider player sales to help balance the books.

Liverpool have struggled for form thus far this term and certainly miss Uruguayan goal machine Luis Suarez and the lengthy absence of striker Daniel Sturrige hasn’t helped matters.

Summer signings Lambert and Balotelli are yet to make an impact which may well be further fueling Liverpool’s desire to bring in another forward and Higuain may well be open to a move to the Premier League.

Napoli have started the season in indifferent fashion and this may well act as extra motivation for a possible move away from the Italian club to Liverpool.

Higuain netted 107 goals in 190 La Liga appearances at Real Madrid and has racked up 24 goals in his debut season at Napoli and is the type of proven goalscorer who could provide Liverpool with an extra cutting edge up front.

Rodgers will look to sell Italian Fabio Borini ahead of such a move and may look to persuade Napoli boss Rafa Benitez to accept the former AS Roma man in a part exchange deal though if that fails Liverpool are willing to match the €40m (£31m) the Italian club paid for Higuain back in July 2013.
