England took 24 minutes to register their first goal against San Marino with Everton defender Phil Jagielka headed home after keeper Aldo Simoncini crashed to the floor for seemingly no reason.
The home side doubled their lead thanks to a penalty from captain Wayne Rooney, who dusted himself down after being kicked in the head to win the spot-kick just before the break.
