Casillas has not been the first-choice La Liga goalkeeper for nearly 18 months now, and with new signing Keylor Navas performing well for Los Blancos, it looks as though the 33-year-old might finally leave his boyhood club.

“I’d love to have an experience abroad to bring more value to Real Madrid,” he said.

“Madrid is my home. I’ll always feel this way. I was educated here and got my start here. I can’t understand my life without Real Madrid.

“I’d love to have an experience abroad to bring more value to Real Madrid, which already has incalculable value to me.”

Liverpool’s current goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has come under serious criticism this season for a string of inconsistent performances, and Brendan Rodgers is likely to try and bring in another top notch stopper to compete with the Belgian for the no.1 jersey.

A move could spark a new lease of life into Casillas, who has dropped off from being regarded as the world’s best, to sitting on the bench for his club.

In an interesting twist though, the Reds could sign Casillas’s long-term rival and former Barcelona player Victor Valdes instead, as the Spaniard is available on a free transfer.

With Valdes costing nothing, it could be that Casillas will only be signed as a contingency plan.
