Liverpool Line Up Another Legendary Spanish Goalkeeper From Real Madrid In Case Victor Valdes Deal Falls Through

Reds have their eye on Iker Casillas if Valdes does not arrive at Anfield.

Liverpool are eyeing a move for legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the January transfer window, report the Express, if their mooted move for free agent Victor Valdes falls through, potentially due to doubts over the former Barcelona stopper’s fitness.

Casillas is set to fall out of favour at the Bernabeu, according to the report, with Italian Carlo Ancelotti ready to decide on Costa Rican Keylor Navas, who was signed from La Liga rivals Levante this summer, as the long-term successor to one of the finest goalkeepers in the club’s history.

A string of errors in recent seasons, as was so cruelly shown at the summer World Cup, have meant that Casillas has largely been on the fringes of the Real first team, with Mourinho and then Ancelotti preferring Diego Lopez for long periods of the last couple of seasons for Real.

Liverpool still expect that Valdes will be the man to come in and challenge underperforming number one Simon Mignolet, with Valdes set to join them on a trial period, but are aware of the concerns over his fitness and are keen not to get stung again after a move for Loic Remy this summer fell through at the last minute due to concerns over his medical.

Casillas would be likely to initially join the club on a loan deal – but that could become a more permanent arrangement if Navas really establishes himself in Madrid.
