The Mirror have come up with eleven reasons why Chelsea have “got the title wrapped up” already. While we at CaughtOffside don’t necessarily agree with all their analysis, they do have a number of valid points.
11) They have the best midfielder in the country
Summer signing Cesc Fabregas has certainly hit the ground running since his return to the Premier League with Chelsea.
He has formed a fantastic partnership with Diego Costa and has been integral to the Blues’ fantastic early form.
10) They have the best centre-forward in the country
One of the most inform strikers in the world at the moment, Costa was the ideal signing for the West Londoners.
They were missing a powerful and clinical forward, so Mourinho went out and got one.
If Costa can continue his excellent early form then it’s hard to argue with the notion that he will fire his team to the title.
9) Mourinho is fearless
Here the Mirror were alluding to the fact that Mourinho was willing to poke a rather angry Roy Keane towards the end of his team’s win over Aston Villa.
This doesn’t so much sound to us like a reason to hand Chelsea the title already, in fact it seems more likely to be the reason the Portuguese manager ends up with his legs broken.
8) Mourinho’s second season success
It is true that Mourinho tends to fare far better in his second season with a club, and the reason for this seems fairly obvious.
The former Real Madrid man is not known for working with what he’s got, preferring to go out and buy the ready made players that will fit his philosophy.
Regardless of the cause however, he is likely to be far stronger this season than he was in his previous year with the Blues.
7) They play like Stoke (according to Manuel Pellegrini)
The Manchester City manager isn’t entirely wrong, with Mourinho focusing very heavily on the defensive stability that Stoke City were known for for so long.
The major difference between Stoke and Chelsea however is the London club’s firepower.
6) Prolific, prolific, prolific
Speaking of firepower, you just have to look at their scoring record so far this season to see how un-Stoke like they’ve been.
Mourinho’s side have already scored seven more goals than any other Premier League team this term and if they continue in this trend then they will easily break the 100 goals mark come the end of the season.
5) Plan A to Z
Certain managers seem to develop a game plan that works and stick with it no matter what. Mourinho however is credited with being able to adapt better than arguably any manager on the planet.
Against relative minnows his team enjoys the majority of possession and knows how to use it, while against the bigger teams they are perfectly capable of soaking up the pressure and hitting their opponents on the break.
4) Petr Cech
The Czech goalkeeper would probably walk into most, if not all, Premier League teams at the moment, yet he is sat on the bench gathering dust.
An injury to your No.1 can often be devastating to your season, but if anything were to happen to Thibaut Courtois they would be safe in the knowledge that a player of Cech’s quality is there to take over.
3) Strength in depth
Chelsea have an unbelievable amount of depth, with a number of world-class players for almost every position.
Against Villa last weekend their bench had a combined total of over 350 international appearances, something very few other teams could boast.
2) Quality at the back
Mourinho’s Chelsea are known for their defensive prowess, and it’s certainly not down to luck. With first choice centre-backs like Gary Cahill and John Terry they are able to shut out most strike forces, but even if one of the pair were to suffer an injury they have ample and able backups.
Branislav Ivanovic and Kurt Zouma are both fantastic options in the centre of defence and when compared to the options that their title rivals have Chelsea really are in a fantastic position.
1) Who else could win it?
Chelsea are already heavy favourites to win it according to the bookies, with City the only other team with even remotely respectable odds.
This is arguably a little unfair on Arsenal, with the Gunners sat in fourth position just one point behind the Citizens and are also the only other undefeated team in the League this season.
