With the reopening of the transfer window just three months away, CaughtOffside identifies five stars who could really benefit from a move…
5. Roberto Soldado – Tottenham Hotspur
He scored 59 goals in 101 La Liga games for Valencia, prompting Spurs to shell out £26m to bring him to White Hart Lane last summer.
Unfortunately, he has really struggled in the Premier League and he does not have the aerial prowess to fully function in Tottenham’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
At 29, Soldado should still attract plenty of interest from clubs on the continent, but Spurs will surely have to accept a big loss on him.

4. Petr Cech – Chelsea
Cech is simply too good to be a back-up goalkeeper at any level.
However, he seems to stand little chance of winning back his place in Jose Mourinho’s team, such is the brilliance of Thibaut Courtois.
The 32-year-old should manufacture a move this January. There are very few teams in the world who would not be interested.
3. Ashley Young – Manchester United
Sometimes players just need a fresh start – and that is exactly what Young requires.
By fresh start, we don’t mean he needs to be reinvented as a left-sided wing-back.
Young needs to go to somewhere like Spurs or Everton, where he will be truly appreciated and get games in his best position.
2. Mesut Ozil- Arsenal
Arsenal’s record signing, who cost £42.5m when he joined from Real Madrid last year, has yet to full convince Gunners fans that he is the real deal.
His career has not really took off in England and there is talk that Bayern Munich could make a move in January.
Surely, Ozil would jump at the chance to join the 2012 European Champions.
1. Steven Gerrard – Liverpool
Gerrard scored a superb free-kick in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Everton, but that does not change the fact that he has been a shell of his former self for the majority of this season.
He no longer has the energy to be the box-to-box midfielder he was in his heyday.
Gerrard was brilliant as a deep-lying playmaker last season, providing 13 Premier League assists, but the sale of Luis Suarez has hit him hard.
Basically, he needs to be surrounded by better players who will truly benefit from his passing and vision.
Let’s face it, he’s had a brilliant career with Liverpool, but he’s not going to win the Premier League with the Reds.
He should go to Spain, where the pace is slower and the sun is hotter.
Real Madrid really seem to be missing Xabi Alonso. Perhaps Gerrard could replace him and add the La Liga title to his list of honours before he finally retires?
