Liverpool have won two, and lost three of their first five games, placing them 11th, while Everton have won just one, with two draws taking them to within a point of their neighbours in 14th.
Defeat for either side could leave them flirting with the relegation zone – a disastrous place for a team with Champions League aspirations to be, even at this early stage of the season.
Here are five key battles that will determine which team will be moving up the table:
5) Alberto Moreno v Kevin Mirallas
The new Liverpool left-back has impressed so far, and has been one of the more consistent members of their group of new signings. But he will have his hands full against Mirallas, who regularly causes problems for any full-back.
4) Dejan Lovren v Romelu Lukaku
Liverpool’s giant Croatian defender has endured a difficult start to his Reds career, and is likely to be sorely tested against Everton’s record signings, who is beginning to find his goal scoring touch again after a slow start to the campaign.
3) Raheem Sterling v Leighton Baines
The teenager has been the Reds standout player so far this season, but he will be up against one of the best full-backs in the Premier League at the weekend. A strong performance from Baines will be crucial to Everton’s chances.
2) Steven Gerrard v Gareth Barry
The two vastly experienced midfield veterans will come head to head, both looking to take control of the game and dominate proceedings. Their link up play in the holding role is crucial to both teams aspirations.
1) Daniel Sturridge v Sylvain Distin
Liverpool’s returning striker will be looking to pick up where he left off, and return with a bang against Everton. He is likely to be up against the experienced Distin, who has struggled so far this season, and will not be looking forward to facing the England man if he starts.
