League Cup Round 3 Star XI: Liverpool & Chelsea Men Among Top Performers

Man City, Stoke, Bolton, Sheffield United, Bournemouth and Shrewsbury players all feature.

The League Cup was back this week and it was certainly entertaining.

52 goals were scored in 16 games – an that’s not even including the 27 penalties that hit the net in Liverpool’s epic shootout win over Middlesbrough.

Here are the eleven players that we think deserve extra credit for their performances in round three…

Goalkeeper: Andy Lonergan – Bolton Wanderers

He was obviously beaten twice in Bolton’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, but his side would have lost by a much greater margin were it not for his heroics between the sticks. Lonergan made eight saves at Stamford Bridge.

Defender: Bob Harris – Sheffield United

United won 1-0 at Leyton Orient and Harris was one of the main factors behind the Blades managing to keep their first clean sheet in five games. Jobi McAnuff didn’t stand a chance!

Defender: Marc Muniesa – Stoke City

Muniesa scored twice – his first goals for Stoke – as the Potters came from behind to win 2-1 at Sunderland.
The former Barcelona defender wasn’t bad at the back either.

Jermaine Grandison – Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury’s 1-0 win over Norwich City was the biggest shock of the round and fans’ favourite Grandison played a big part in a brilliant defensive display at the New Meadow.

Defender: Nathaniel Clyne – Southampton

Clyne showed just why he is being tipped for big things by producing a first class performance in Southampton’s 2-1 win at Arsenal. He scored the game’s winning goal from long-range and burned an incredible amount of energy in bombing up and down the right touchline all night.

Midfield: Andre Schurrle – Chelsea

Schurrle did not score in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers, but the German ran the show from midfield. He came very close to the finding the net, hitting the woodwork twice and having an effort cleared off the line.

Midfield: Jordan Rossiter – Liverpool

The 17-year-old has been dubbed the ‘New Steven Gerrard’. That is rather ridiculous title, but he showed all the composure and confidence of the former England captain to open the scoring against Middlesbrough on Tuesday with a low finish from long range.

Midfielder: Frank Lampard – Manchester City

Oh Jose, why did you let this man leave Chelsea this summer? Fresh from scoring against his former club on Sunday, Lampard continued his hot streak with a brace against Sheffield Wednesday, helping City to a 7-0 win.

Midfielder: Dan Gosling – Bournemouth

Gosling had fallen off the football radar of many fans after flopping during four seasons as a Newcastle United player. However, he has been rejuvenated since joining Bournemouth this summer. He netted twice in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win at Cardiff City and has now scored four goals in this season’s League Cup already.

Forward: James Collins – Shrewsbury Town

Collins bagged his fourth goal of the season on Tuesday night. He did not seem at all fazed by going toe to toe with Norwich’s Championship defenders. He certainly has the ability to play at a higher level than League Two, despite struggling at Hibs last term.

Forward: Edin Dzeko – Manchester City

The Bosnia international had not found the net in eight games for club and country prior to Wednesday night’s brace in City’s 7-0 win over Sheff Wed. He simply destroyed the opposition with his power and his confidence must now be much higher.
