Last night, Cristiano Ronaldo moved to within three of the all-time leading Champions League goalscorer: Madrid icon Raul. He also moved above Lionel Messi into second place, with the Barcelona man currently on 67, four behind the leader.

In the pages below, CaughtOffside counts down the top ten goalscorers ever in Champions League and European Cup football. Only three of the players on the list are active in the competition this year.

PSG forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will move into the top ten if he finds the net in this years tournament – he currently has 41 goals from 103 games, including strikes for Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona and AC Milan, as well as his current side.

10) Didier Drogba – 42 goals in 87 games

The hero of many famous Chelsea night, including their maiden Champions League win in 2012, he has also scored for Galatasaray and Marseille in the competition.

9) Filippo Inzaghi – 46 goals in 81 games

The man who broke Liverpool hearts in the Champions League final of 2007. Has also found the net for Juventus.

8) Eusébio – 46 goals in 65 games

The legendary Portuguese striker who scored goals for fun for Benfica.

7) Andriy Shevchenko – 48 goals in 100 games

So often the AC Milan here, he turned villain when he missed the decisive penalty against Liverpool back in 2005. Also played in the tournament for Dynamo Kiev and Chelsea.

6) Alfredo Di Stéfano – 49 goals in 58 games

One of the greatest players of all time who was the inspiration behind Real Madrid’s early dominance of the competition.

5) Thierry Henry – 50 goals in 112 games

Finally tasted victory in the competition in 2009 after missing out with Arsenal in 2006 against the team he won it with, Barcelona. Also played for AS Monaco.

4) Ruud van Nistelrooy – 56 goals in 73 games

Was never on the winning side in a Champions League final despite excelling for both Manchester United and Real Madrid. Also played for PSV.

3) Lionel Messi – 67 goals in 86 games

Three times a winner of the competition with Barcelona, and now looking to cement himself in the list of all time legends.

2) Cristiano Ronaldo – 68 goals in 104 games

Won the competition with both Manchester United and Real Madrid, and is now approaching being the competition’s all time leading scorer.

1) Raul – 71 goals in 142 games

A legend for Real Madrid, and also a scorer for Schalke 04 in his latter years. Surely his record will go in the near future.
