Liverpool 2-1 Ludogrets: Highlights: Watch Champions League goals, here
Here’s the best XI of players who turned out for their teams in the Champions League on Tuesday evening…
GK) Danijel Subasic – AS Monaco
Made two excellent saves which secured his Monaco side a clean sheet and an opening night 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
DR) Junior Caicara – Ludogorets
Bombed forward down Liverpool’s right and looked like a top, European standard right-back.
DC) Eric Abidal – Olympiacos
The Frenchman battled Atletico Madrid’s Mario Mandzukic all evening, and although the Croat scored, Abidal’s heroic performance helped the Greeks beat last season’s finalists.
DC) Neven Subotic – Borussia Dortmund
Dealt with Danny Welbeck with ease, and sprayed excellent long balls seemingly at will versus Arsenal.
DL) Alberto Moreno – Liverpool
Moreno’s looking like a great signing. He worked tirelessly, and assisted Liverpool’s opening goal.
MC) Luka Modric – Real Madrid
The Croatian playmaker totally ran the game at the Bernabeu, playing an instrumental passing role in the centre, as the champions thrashed FC Basel 5-1.
MC) Axel Witsel – Zenit St. Petersburg
Witsel played a battling and effective role for the Russians, who picked up an unexpected 2-0 away win at Benfica.
AMR) Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang – Borussia Dortmund
His pure pace caused Arsenal problems all evening. He bagged one, and hit the bar with another fizzing shot. Kieran Gibbs had a torid night as a result.
AML) Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid
It’s unsure whether Ronaldo will be able to match his 17 goal haul from last term in Europe, but he got off to a scoring start, bagging from a Gareth Bale cross, and assisting an excellent Karim Benzema goal at the death.
FC) Carlos Tevez – Juventus
The Argentina striker scored twice, including a brilliant freekick – although we’re not so sure about his robot celebration!
FC) Mario Balotelli – Liverpool
The Italian worked extremely hard, dropped deep to pick up possession, and opened the scoring with a delicate finish in the 83rd minute. Liverpool fans will be over the moon.
