The Gunners were left with just three senior defenders for their 2-0 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday’s Champions League match, and are desperate for reinforcements that can help provide temporary cover.

Wenger is looking for a central defender to be used as back-up to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and is aware that Premier League clubs can still sign free agents despite the transfer window closing at the start of September.

The Daily Mail believe that scouts have been asked to examine short-term options Diego Lugano and Joseph Yobo, who are both available and have been discussed at the club’s London Colney HQ.

Both have Premier League experience — Yobo for Everton and Norwich and Lugano with West Brom — which is key for the Gunners. Any moves, though, are a way from fruition with the club still considering their options.

Yobo, 34, made 220 league appearances for the Toffees beteween 2002 and 2012, while Lugano, 33, who was once ranked among the best defenders in the world, played 12 times for the Baggies last term.
