The appointment of Henderson by Brendan Rodgers represents the culmination of a huge rise to prominence over the last 18 months by the former Sunderland midfielder, who had been criticised for his early displays at Anfield, with Liverpool having paid big to lure him to the club from the Stadium of Light during their profligate spending spree under the management of Kenny Dalglish.
The decision is perhaps made with the next few years in mind, with captain Steven Gerrard heading towards the end of his career and likely to be less of a certain fixture on the teamsheet as time moves on, probably from next season.
Henderson has become one of the key players in Rodgers’ Liverpool team and seems like a natural choice, although he is still a young player who is being elevated to a position of some prominence at a young age.
A player known for his hard work and intelligence as much as any huge levels of natural talent and skill, however, Henderson is clearly the kind of player who could be considered as a captain and will likely pull on the armband for the first time in the near future when Gerrard is unavailable.
