In today’s financial climate a number of clubs have fallen by the wayside, thrust out of existence as quickly as they were formed, but below are 11 who have stood the test of time to become the oldest clubs in the world.

Formed: 1867

Originally a cricket club when formed in 1820, they became one of the founding members of the Football League.

10. Wrexham

Founded: 1864

The Welsh side are the oldest professional club in the world, leading the charge when amateurism was the done thing as the game took shape.

9. Nottingham Forest

Founded: 1865

One of the UK’s most successful clubs have fallen on hard times recently, but now look to be heading back for the top flight.

8. Brigg Town FC

Founded: 1864

Now in the non-league pyramid, they are the oldest club in Lincolshire and are known as the Zebras.

7. Bradford Park Avenue

Founded: 1863

Another non-league side, they went through a reformation in the 1970s, and again in 1988.

6. Stoke City

Founded: 1863

The Potters are the oldest club currently playing in the Premier League, where they have managed to remain for the past few seasons.

5. Notts County

Founded: 1862

The Nottingham club are the reason why Juventus don their famous black and white stripped kit, but now compete in the lower reaches of the Football League.

4. Worksop Town FC

Founded: 1861

Based in northeast Nottinghamshire, proving that the county was a hotbed of football action in the 1860s.

3. Cray Wanderers

Founded: 1860

Based in Bromley in Kent, the club are now housed in the seventh tier of the non-league football pyramid.

Founded: 1860

They may only be the second oldest club in the world but they proudly boast the oldest ground.
