Ismail Gunduz, an Austrain footballer who played for amateur side SK Rum, has been banned for 70 matches for headbutting a referee in a match with SPG Innsbruck West.

According to reports on BBC Sport, the incident occurred when the player was shown a second yellow card in the 87th minute of the game, causing a furious reaction and a shocking attack on the responsible official.

Rum coach Michael Messner told a local paper: “We distance ourselves from Ismail Gunduz’s behaviour. He was thrown out of the club with immediate effect.”

The Tirol Football Association, which governs the Tirol Liga – the fourth division of Austrian football – took the decision to impose the record-breaking suspension, while they also fined the club 257 euros (£204).

“The barrier of 70 games is certainly a high punishment, but on account of the various witnesses’ questionings also defensible,” Tirol FA spokesman Horst Scherl told BBC reporters.

In response, Gunduz claimed that he slipped, he said: “This sentence is madness, I will do all I can to return to the pitch.”
