10) Stevan Jovetic (Manchester City)

The Montenegro international’s hopes of a Premier League career came close to being dashed when injury restricted him to just 16 indifferent appearances last season. But the 24-year-old returned on song this summer, scoring twice in his team’s 3-1 win over Liverpool.

9) Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

The England international has failed to make more than 25 Premier League appearances since 2010-11, appearing 51 times in four years. However, after a full pre-season and a solid start to the season, it looks as if the issues may at last be behind him.

8) Martin Kelly (Crystal Palace)

The former Liverpool defender was once expected to fill the void left by Jamie Carragher’s retirement. He looked close to realising that potential when he made England’s Euro 2012 squad, but a succession of injuries have hampered his progress ever since.

7) Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal)

The left-back would likely be an England regular if he could maintain his fitness and stay injury-free. Unfortunately, his record his even worse than Wilshere’s. He has so far made 90 Premier League appearances in this his eighth season with the club.

6) Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

The Liverpool hit-man netted 21 Premier League goals last season. However, those goals came in just 29 games. He needs to keep his injury troubles under control if he is to fully realise his incredible potential.

5) Jack Rodwell (Sunderland)

A mixture of injuries and world class teammates restricted the former Everton midfielder to just 16 Premier League appearances during two years with Manchester City. The three-time England international is now trying to rebuild his career at Sunderland.

4) Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

How many goals would he have got last season if he stayed fit? The Argentine striker scored 17 Premier League goals in a restrictive 23 appearances. His total was 28 in 34 for all competitions, only two off his career-best, and in 14 less games.

3) Robin van Persie (Manchester United)

Between 2011 and 2013, the Dutch striker was offering up a false impression of his ability to avoid injuries. For two seasons in a row – one with Arsenal and one with Manchester United – he played 38 Premier League games. However, the former of those occasions marked the first time the forward had played over 30 league games in a season in his career.

2) Andy Carroll (West Ham United)

The story of what could have been. The once exciting young Newcastle striker has had a fairly miserable few years. After being ditched following an injury plagued spell at Liverpool, he has fared little better at West Ham. He managed just 16 appearances in all competitions last season.

1) Abou Diaby (Arsenal)

Yes, he does still exist, and fair play to him for still not giving up. The man once dubbed the new Patrick Vieira has played 32 Premier League games in the last four years. Now 28-years-old, it seems extraordinary that the Gunners are still hoping that he’ll come good.
