Gunners did approach towering Serbian following Birmingham City release.
Despite reports being denied by Arsene Wenger, free agent striker Nikola Zigic has confirmed that his representatives were in talks over a move to Arsenal, report the Daily Star.
Wenger had denied all knowledge of any interest in the former Valencia striker, but the Serbian seems to have suggested otherwise, claiming that his agent was in discussions with the Gunners right until the end of the transfer window:
“My agent was talking with Arsenal but they finally opted for another player.”
“We talked with them until the last days of the market. I am very happy because Arsenal had me on their list.”
The other player being talked of is likely to be Danny Welbeck, the Manchester United forward who the Gunners swooped for on the final day of the window in a £16 million deal, with fans having demanded the signing of a striker after Olivier Giroud was ruled out for up to four months,
The 33 year-old centre forward Zigic has been without a club since his release by Championship outfit Birmingham City at the end of last season, his considerable wages having been usustainable for the Blues since their relegation from the Premier League.
Zigic was, however, pivotal in Birmingham’s shock 2011 League Cup final victory against Arsenal, causing chaos in the Gunners’ defence and heading in the opening goal for the Blues, who were relegated a few months later and only avoided another demotion, to the third tier of English football, thanks to a late equaliser against Bolton Wanderers on the last day of last season.
