Transfer deadline day is here, but ten stars look set to stay put after a summer of speculation. CaughtOffside looks at the players teams will regret missing out on this summer:
10) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)
Linked with Arsenal and Tottenham throughout the summer, but Southampton stood firm and refused to allow another of their star players to leave. He would have been a great addition for either North London side, and expect him to be linked with one or both clubs again in January.
9) Jackson Martinez (Porto)
The Colombian was linked with Arsenal at the start of the summer, and it came as a surprise when no Premier League club firmed up their interest with a bid. The Porto hit-man has a great goal scoring record, but was never close to a move, much to the delight of his current club.
8) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)
The Chilean was involved in the transfer saga of the summer, as rumours continually linked him with a move from Juventus to Manchester United. It seemed inevitable that the deal would eventually be completed, but it looks likely that he will now stay put, with United having moved on to other targets.
7) Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli)
The Argentine World Cup star was one of the names mentioned while Liverpool were looking for a replacement for Luis Suarez. Several other Premier League clubs were believed to be interested, and you have to think a strong bid could have convince the Italians into selling, especially after they missed out on Champions League football.
6) Xherdan Shaqiri (Bayern Munich)
The Swiss winger was linked strongly with Liverpool during the World Cup, with the player seemingly keen on a move after growing frustrated at Bayern Munich. The Germans were not keen on selling the player, but surely a Premier League team could have convinced them with the player’s help.
5) Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
The French forward was heavily linked with a move away from Real Madrid earlier this summer, before eventually signing a new contract. Did one of the Premier League giants, such as Arsenal – who are now desperate for striking reinforcements – miss a trick by not making a bid.
4) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)
Manchester United were desperate for a world class defender this summer, but were told in no uncertain terms that a move for Hummels would not be successful. However, based on their 3-5-2 formation and recent struggles, surely they could have done more to try and force the issue, especially when you consider the money they’ve spent elsewhere.
3) Edinson Cavani (PSG)
Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked with the striker this summer, as he looked for a chance to be the main man at a big club. However, an injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic ultimately ended any chance of him leaving Paris this summer.
2) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)
Arsenal and Chelsea were thought to be battling for the German World Cup winner, with the Gunners especially close to making a deal happen. However, the player and club eventually decided that he would see out the final year of his contract in Madrid. It will be interesting to see where he ends up next summer.
1) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)
Another name that was linked with Liverpool this summer, as well as Manchester United and Barcelona. Again, Dortmund battled hard to keep one of their prize assets, and it would surely have taken a monster bid to lure the German into making a move, despite him turning down a new contract.
