It has been another exciting weekend of Premier League action and, with transfer deadline day now upon us and the league set to take a short break for international matches, it is the time for reflection on the action that has just passed.
Some of the stand-out team performances of the weekend came from Leicester City and Burnley, who held more illustrious opponents to draws on home turf, whilst Liverpool and Chelsea were also irresistible away from home.
This is our Premier League team of the week:
GK) Asmir Begovic (Stoke City)
Having started the season slowly, it was imperative that Stoke City ‘keeper Asmir Begovic put in a performance at Eastlands on Saturday and the Bosnian certainly obliged, saving brilliantly from Yaya Toure and looking solid throughout.
RB) Ritchie de Laet (Leicester City)
Former Manchester United youngster Ritchie de Laet has found his feet in the game since moving to Leicester City and the Belgian was superb against Arsenal, tackling strongly in defence and offering an overlapping threat when the Foxes moved forwards.
CB) Jason Shackell (Burnley)
The Burnley captain led by example as his team snuffed out any threat from a limp Manchester United at Turf Moor – the former Norwich City man will be key for the Clarets this season.
CB) Liam Moore (Leicester City)
Leicester City’s young England Under 21 interantional centre back Liam Moore has taken to Premier League football like a duck to water – once again putting in an impressive display against a top side as he helped the Foxes to keep Arsenal shackled at the King Power Stadium.
LB) Alberto Moreno (Liverpool)
Liverpool left back Albero Moreno needed this performance after struggling on his debut at Manchester City last week – the Spaniard was superb for the Reds, rampaging up and down the left flank and sealing the game for Liverpool with a wonderful run and finish.
RM) Nathan Dyer (Swansea City)
Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer is usually a quietly efficient performer rather than a headline grabber – but he was the difference maker as the Swans continued their 100% start to the season against West Brom, getting himself on the scoresheet twice.
CM) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)
Despite being linked away from the club for much of the summer, Morgan Schneiderlin’s head seems to be fully focused on life at St. Mary’s – the Frenchman was superb at West Ham, scoring twice and running the midfield.
CM) Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
Jordan Henderson is another player who had started the season slowly – but the industrious central midfielder flourished as his side went on the rampage at White Hart Lane, creating the opening goal and helping his side to control the centre of the park.
LM) Wayne Routledge (Swansea City)
Swansea’s pace and trickery out wide was at the heart of their 3-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion and, despite not grabbing the headlines that Dyer did, Wayne Routledge was still excellent and helped his side along with a fine goal from outside the box.
SC) Diego Costa (Chelsea)
Diego Costa is both a battering ram and an excellent footballer – the Spaniard is an absolute nightmare for opposition defenders to deal with. He left Everton’s defence creaking and beaten, with his pace and power causing absolute carnage, whilst also leaving Goodison Park with two well taken goals.
SC) Mame Biram Diouf (Stoke City)
Stoke City striker Mame Biram Diouf scored his first Premier League goal since leaving Manchester United with an absurd effort that saw him run the length of the pitch, beating three City defenders before neatly tucking the ball underneath Joe Hart. Other than that, however, he worked tirelessly and was unfortunate not to win a penalty for his side.
