AS Monaco could be set to hijack Arsenal’s proposed deal to sign £20m-rated AS Roma striker Mattia Destro as they eye a replacement for Manchester United-bound Radamel Falcao.
The Ligue 1 giants are in desperate need of new additions in attack after allowing Falcao to join United on a season-long loan deal, and should have money to spend after bringing in a loan fee for the player worth between £16-18m.
It now looks as though they could focus their attention on beating Arsenal to the signing of Destro, who has become a top target for the Gunners after they also showed an interest in snapping up Falcao, but missed out to United for his signature.
The Italian international was in fine form in Serie A last season, scoring 13 goals in just 20 games for the club to attract interest from a host of top clubs around Europe, also including the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Arsenal are also in great need of a new striker as they look to bring in a player to fill in for the injured Olivier Giroud, with little in the way of backup for the Frenchman at the Emirates Stadium as he faces as much as four months out.
Still, a potential big-money move to Monaco would no doubt be tempting for the 23-year-old as he considers his future on the final day of the transfer window, and this could prove to be the latest blow for the Gunners in the transfer market.
The big-spending French side were also linked with big names such as Mario Balotelli and Mario Mandzukic earlier this summer in anticipation of Falcao’s exit, but missed out on both as they ended up joining Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, respectively.
