The Blues spent £32m on bringing Costa in from Atletico Madrid this summer, and also re-signed club legend Didier Drogba on a free transfer after also allowing the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Demba Ba to leave for Everton and Besiktas, respectively.
With Fernando Torres’ future also up in the air and a move to AC Milan looking increasingly likely, it now looks as though Jose Mourinho will try to push through a late move for Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez to enhance his options in attack, with Costa’s injury leaving only the 36-year-old Drogba as an option upfront.
Hernandez has been linked with Chelsea in the past, and his impressive goals-to-games ratio has made him a target for a number of top clubs this summer despite his falling down in the pecking order at Old Trafford in recent times.
The likes of Juventus and Inter Milan are also believed to be chasing the Mexican international, while Premier League sides such as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with an interest in snapping him up in the past.
Chelsea will now hope that a bid of around £16m could persuade United to let the player go, with the Red Devils keen to offload one of him or Danny Welbeck before the end of the summer, with the club-record signing of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid set to provide even more competition in attack for Louis van Gaal’s side.
Welbeck has also been linked with Arsenal and Tottenham, as well as with Everton, but with United struggling to find buyers for the England international, they may now be open to selling Hernandez instead, after learning of Chelsea’s interest.
The Red Devils would prefer not to sell to another English club, and it remains to be seen if £16m will prove to be enough for the Blues to bring the predatory goal-poacher to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have also been linked with AS Roma striker Mattia Destro in recent times, though Arsenal are currently leading the chase for his signature.
