Arsenal have made a formal approach to AS Roma for the possible signing of promising Italian international striker Mattia Destro, according to Calciomercato.it.
The Gunners are on the lookout for a new signing upfront before the end of the summer transfer window, with Arsene Wenger keen to bring in a replacement for the injured Olivier Giroud, who looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, which could take up around half the season.
Wenger’s side were arguably short of options in attack anyway with little in the way of backup to Giroud, and the Frenchman’s injury should now spark the club back into life in the transfer market in the final few days before deadline day.
Destro now appears to be Arsenal’s main target, and the north London giants have been told that he will cost around £19m after they made a formal approach for the player.
It remains to be seen if Arsenal will meet that asking price, with the club having previously pulled out of deals for the likes of Mario Balotelli and Loic Remy this summer – both of whom were available for less.
Destro was Roma’s top scorer last season, scoring 13 goals in just 20 appearances.
