Sunderland are closing in on a loan deal for centre back Sebastian Coates, report the Star, despite the fact that it would rule out a loan move for his Liverpool teammate Fabio Borini.
Borini spent last season on loan with Gus Poyet’s man and had a successful spell, persuading them to go back for the Italian on a permanent basis this summer – but the former Chelsea trainee would rather return on loan rather than full time.
If Sunderland did go through with a loan deal for Uruguayan international Coates, however, it would rule out Borini coming on a short term basis as well – because Premier League rules mean that a club cannot sign two players on loan from the same team.
Despite spending so much of his time this summer on trying to put together a deal to sign Borini on a permanent deal, however, the report suggests that Poyet accepts a move is unlikely – hence Sunderland’s increased interest in former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou from Lille.
He also wants to strengthen at the back, however, which has led to the interest in Coates, a player who has found himself on the fringes of the Liverpool first team – particularly since the arrival of Dejan Lovren this summer and the fact that, to date, the club have not let Daniel Agger move on.
