Bayern to swoop for Chelsea and United targets.
Bayern Munich could be set to swoop for two big-name Premier League targets this summer as Pep Guardiola seeks to improve the defensive strength of his squad for the new season.
According to various sources, the Bavarian giants want one new player to come in in defence, and one in defensive midfield to replace the two roles often filled by Javi Martinez, who is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.
Bayern have had a relatively quiet summer in the transfer market this year, but now look to end with a flourish as they prepare to deal a double transfer blow to Chelsea in particular, who had been tracking both of the players in question heavily for much of the last few months.
Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)
The first player in Bayern’s sights is Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. According to Spanish publication Sport, the German international could be the player to come in and fill the void left by the injured Martinez, and is available for around £16m due to currently being out of favour at the Bernabeu.
Both Chelsea and Arsenal had been keen to sign Khedira this summer as he stalled on signing a new contract with the Spanish giants, but the Bundesligsa could now be his destination after spending four years in La Liga.
Mehdi Benatia (AS Roma)
Second on Bayern’s list is AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia, who has been strongly linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United in recent weeks, but who according to German publication Bild is now closing in on a move to the Allianz Arena. Valued at around £30m, the Moroccan international would certainly make a superb signing for the Bavarian giants in defence, after establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs in Europe with his rock-solid displays in Serie A last season.
It would have been great to see the 27-year-old in the Premier League, but he now looks set to be the latest big name to add to this immense-looking Bayern squad for the 2014/15 season.
