10) Rickie Lambert (Liverpool)
After a highly impressive couple of seasons with Southampton, Liverpool have snapped up a quality centre-forward in Rickie Lambert for just £4m. The 32-year-old may not be anywhere near the world class quality of Luis Suarez, but he will provide great depth upfront after the Uruguayan’s departure and be a good short-term signing for the club. To get such an experienced and seasoned goalscorer for so cheap has to go down as one of the smartest signings of the summer.
9) Muhamed Besic (Everton)
After some stand-out performances for his national side Bosnia and Herzegovina at this summer’s World Cup, Everton’s new midfield signing Muhamed Besic looks like a real bargain, arriving at Goodison Park for just £4m. The 21-year-old should add plenty of quality and intelligence to the Toffees’ play in the middle of the park, and provide them with a good long-term option in that position.
8) Bojan Krkic (Stoke City)
A wildcard signing from Barcelona, Bojan Krkic’s £3m transfer to Stoke City could go either way after his up-and-down career so far, but there’s no doubt that at that price he represents a low-risk transfer with plenty of potential. Once regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in world football, the Spaniard is still only 23 years old and has plenty of time to improve on a disappointing few years. If Stoke can get the best out of Bojan, that £3m will seem a real bargain and great piece of business from the club.
7) Bafetimbi Gomis (Swansea City)
Always nice to get a quality player for free, Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis has finally made the move to the Premier League by joining Swansea City. The 28-year-old was one of the most prolific forward players in Ligue 1 during his career in France, and he will prove an excellent addition for the Swans if he can reproduce his best form at the Liberty Stadium this term.
6) David Ospina (Arsenal)
Brought in for just £3m, Arsenal have signed a superb goalkeeper in David Ospina, who will likely challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the number one place at the Emirates Stadium. The Colombian international first came onto Arsene Wenger’s radar with his performances for Ligue 1 side Nice, and then finally won him over with his heroics for his national side at this summer’s World Cup.
5) Ashley Cole (Roma)
Still a world class left-back on his day, Ashley Cole could be a terrific signing for Italian side AS Roma, who snapped up the England veteran after he left Chelsea on a free. The 33-year-old may not have the same pace that made him such a threat up and down the pitch at his peak, but he has proven himself to be one of the finest full-backs of his generation with his intelligent defending and ability to get forward and aid the attack.
4) Bacary Sagna (Manchester City)
Another superb free transfer, Bacary Sagna should be a top class signing for Manchester City after deciding to leave Arsenal at the end of his contract. The 31-year-old may have plenty of competition for places at his new club, but has more than enough quality and experience to show that he has something to offer to his new club, who will surely be strong favourites for the Premier League title this season.
3) Ivan Rakitic (Barcelona)
For a fee thought to be around £14m, Ivan Rakitic is by no means the cheapest signing of the summer, but looks one of the best bargains given his superb quality. The 26-year-old attracted plenty of interest from top clubs prior to his move to the Nou Camp, having starred for Sevilla last season as they won the Europa League.
2) Toni Kroos (Real Madrid)
Another fairly expensive signing by most standards at around £20m, but Real Madrid’s new boy Toni Kroos certainly has the potential to go down as a real bargain in today’s market where players such as Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw move for much more than that. Kroos is a world class midfield playmaker, and has been a key member of Bayern Munich’s treble-winning side and Germany’s World Cup-winning side in recent seasons, showing how vital a player he can be at the very highest level. No doubt one who will go down as a steal if he reaches his best form at the Bernabeu.
1) Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
One of the best free transfers we’ll see in a long time, Bayern Munich have signed world class Polish striker Robert Lewandowski on a Bosman deal after he allowed his contract at rivals Borussia Dortmund to run down. The 25-year-old scored a superb 103 goals in just 185 games at his previous club, and will surely get even better under Pep Guardiola, with the quality of this Bayern side and their attacking play.
