Liverpool have apparently cooled their interest in Swansea City’s Ivorian powerhouse Wilfried Bony, and instead could sign one of the better strikers in Ligue 1 last year.

The Reds could make a £16m bid for Alexandre Lacazette, the 23-year-old Lyon forward, reports the Daily Star.

Lacazette scored 15 goals in the French top division last season, usually playing through the middle. His pace and dribbling ability though mean he’s equally capable of being used on the left, and Brendan Rodgers will no doubt appreciate his versatility, whereas Bony is only really capable of playing centrally.

Liverpool, who finished second in the Premier League last term, have already been very active in the transfer market. As well as signing Emre Can, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic (medical completed but deal yet confirmed) for just under £60m, they have offloaded Luis Suarez to Barcelona for £75m – and are expected to reinvest this money straight back into the team.

The new signings will have some job on their hands to replace the goals and creativity of the maverick Uruguayan – with Suarez notching 31 times and registering 12 assists last term.
