Manchester United look all set to be able to seal their third major signing of the summer, with Feyenoord and Holland international defender turning down Serie a side Lazio in favour of a move to link up with his national manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, according to reports from the Mail.
De Vrij has enjoyed a successful 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign with The Netherlands so far, finding the net in their opening win over Spain and generally impressing watchers with his solid and commanding displays in van Gaal’s controversial three man defence.
Alongside Aston Villa man Ron Vlaar and Bruno Martins Indi, de Vrij has been particularly solid and has barely put a foot wrong, performances that indicate that he should be able to fill one of the gaps vacated by departing duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
With well over 100 Eredivisie appearances for Feyenoord under his belt at the tender age of 22, de Vrij is a player whose experience belies his tender years and, theoretically, he should have few problems with the pressure that will come from joining a club as big as United.
Despite van Gaal not officially starting his new job until the Netherlands are knocked out of the World Cup, the Red Devils have already secured massive moves for midfielder Ander Herrera and left back Luke Shaw this summer.
