The first World Cup game at the modern Maracana takes place tonight as the tournament’s second favourites take on rank outsiders Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Most eyes will be on Barcelona’s mercurial striker Lionel Messi, who, despite winning six La Liga crowns and three Champions Leagues, has yet to find his best form at the greatest show on Earth.
Messi has a decent international goalscoring record for Argentina, though, scoring 38 times in 86 senior games.
He will be hoping to add to his tally against Bosnia, as will Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who currently has 21 in 51.
Aguero’s City teammate Edin Dzeko will want to play the role of party pooper in South America.
Dzeko scored 10 times in World Cup qualifying and he is his nation’s all-time leading marksman with 35 goals in 62 senior internationals.
Other star names that are likely to be on show include Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria, Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, Paris Saint-Germain’s Ezequiel Lavezzi, Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and Roma playmaker Miralem Pjanic.
